Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Review

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Review – A Gorgeous, Flawed Masterpiece

The Verdict (9/10): Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 delivers one of the most visually stunning and emotionally charged RPG experiences of the year, even if some pacing issues and opaque systems hold it back from true perfection.

A Race Against Time in a Dying World

The premise immediately hooks you: Every year, the enigmatic Paintress emerges to erase people from existence. As leader of the 33rd (and final) expedition, you have just 33 in-game days to stop her before your entire squad is wiped from reality. The ever-present countdown creates incredible tension – every rest, every detour, every battle carries weight.

Gameplay That Rewards Strategy

The turn-based combat system innovates with its time-cost mechanic:

✅ Meaningful Choices: Each action consumes precious hours. Do you spend time scouting for supplies or push forward to conserve days?
✅ Brutal Consequences: Permadeath is handled brilliantly, with fallen comrades leaving behind legacy bonuses.
✅ Visual Splendor: Battles unfold like animated paintings, with spell effects that belong in an art gallery.

But… The middle section drags with filler quests, and some mechanics aren’t well explained. You’ll likely need to consult a guide at points.

A Villain For the Ages

The Paintress is this generation’s most haunting antagonist. Her appearances are rare but terrifying, and the final confrontation is an all-timer. That said, key lore is buried too deep – you’ll need to scour optional logs to fully grasp her motives.

Characters That Feel Real

Your squadmates are the heart of the experience. Their banter feels authentic, and when tragedy strikes (as it often does), it lands with devastating impact. Just be prepared for some awkward early-game dialogue before the writing finds its footing.

Should You Play It?

Absolutely. While not flawless, Expedition 33 delivers:

  • One of the most original RPG narratives in years

  • Combat that actually makes you consider time as a resource

  • Visuals that redefine what “art style” can mean in games

Final Score: 9/10
A breathtaking achievement that stumbles just often enough to remind you it’s human.
